Meeting Jane Goodall
We visited Jane Goodall because we are interested in the environment. It is important for the water and land to be healthy for wildlife to live and thrive. Visiting the Santiam River and Glen Creek got us even more interested in the environment. At these water features, we tested the water’s quality to find out if it was healthy for wildlife. Just like us, Jane Goodall has a passion for animals and their living conditions.
Jane Goodall told us her inspiring life story. When she was very little she was always interested in animals and read many animal books. First, she got a job at an animal museum. Then, her passion grew causing her to save up her money to purchase tickets to Africa. In Africa, Jane lived in a tent and was disliked by the chimps. One day at a mountain peak she discovered the chimps’ behavior. After a while, she could approach the chimps without their discomfort. Over time, she bonded with a chimp named David Grey Beard. She named him that because of his silvery beard. Eventually, she was able to bond with the other chimps.
We met Jane at David Douglas High School in Portland, Oregon. Here, we presented our poster board to Dr. Goodall about how we are helping the environment. After that, some of our group viewed other peoples’ presentations. Our favorite was a birds of prey show where we saw a live barn owl and peregrine falcon. At the end of the event, Dr. Goodall gave everyone a motivating speech.
Overall, Dr. Goodall wants the world to be full of peace and beauty. To do this, she wants everyone to do large and small thing to improve the world around us.
